Practical Healthy Eating Plan

Eat foods low in saturated-and trans-fats such as rice, fish and vegetables.

Remember the analogy of the human body as a car; our bodies are no different really. In order for us to function at our optimal best we need to add fats to our diet and they actually assist in weight loss. By adding the good fats to your ‘tank’ is not all that difficult providing you know what to look for.

There are four different types of fats and they are:polyunsaturated – which is liquid at room temperature, and are found in foods such as corn oil, sunflower oil, sesame oil and seeds and flax seed oil. There are a whole host of reasons why to add this fat to your diet from controlling blood sugar, preventing blood clots and assisting with the body’s water by maintaining equilibrium. Monosaturated – are excellent sources of the healthy fats and are known to reduce the risks of heart disease. Foods containing these good fats are nuts, sesame and pumpkin seeds, olives and avocados and it can also be found in oils such as Olive oil and canola oil. Mediterranean countries have used these types of fats and oils for centuries and have recorded a lower incidence of cholesterol, breast cancer and other types of cancer including bowel cancer. If you want your hair, skin and nails to look healthy and strong, it’s also an antioxidant rich in vitamin E. Aim to have more of this in your diet.

Now for the bad news – saturated. These fats come from animal sources and are solid at room temperature, for example – butter. Saturated fats should be avoided and should be restricted to less than 10grams per day. Foods that contain saturated fats are found in a variety of other dairy products too, so always check the labels before purchasing. It can also be found in lard, some meats, (here again, always look for the heart tick selections when shopping, as these are the ones that have been approved by the National Heart Foundation), and the humble egg. While saturated fat is unhealthy, the worst offender is the hydrogenated or transient fats which are usually found in things like margarine and some take away foods, particularly if they are fried and deep fried. A good example of this type of food is deep fried fish and chips. These are considered to be very bad for us because of the impact to our hearts and circulatory system in that they are one of the contributing factors to clogging of arteries called Atherosclerosis. This is the accumulation of fatty deposits inside the artery walls, particularly those leading to and from the heart. Blood clots can also form if the plaque or build up of these fatty deposits becomes too high and breaks off – and is often the cause of heart attacks. So again always check the labels before buying and if it has a listing for it then you know what to do with it – put it back! Or just steer clear of them altogether.

A Practical Approach to Healthy Eating

I have been going to the gym for the past 3 years. My weight lost did not happen overnight. I did not give up going to the gym after a few week but I made going to the gym a habit I wanted to continuously get the results I currently have to enjoy.

I feel that it is exactly the same when it comes to healthy eating. You will never be healthy, eating healthy food occasionally. You have to make healthy eating a habit if you want to obtain nutritional health. Human beings are always creating a hype when it comes to healthy eating especially after they read books or view websites that talk about nutrition. While many of these books and websites tell you what you should eat in-order to be healthy, they fail to teach you how to make healthy eating a habit. Thus in a short period of time when temptations come, people fall right back into their old unhealthy eating habits.

What is a Habit? According to Webster’s dictionary a habit is ìa behavior pattern acquired by frequent repetition or physiologic exposure that shows itself in regularity or increased facility of performance.

Do you realize that if we simply apply this principle of healthy eating we will be on our way to vibrant healthier lifestyle.

Bad Eating Habits:

As with good eating habits; bad eating habits do not develop overnight. For most people these habits began when they were kids. Thus one reason why many adults have a hard time breaking their bad eating habits is because these habits have been a part of their lifestyle for many years since when we were young.

Why Do We Eat:

There are two main reasons why we eat. One is to supply fuel for our body. The other reason is for pleasure. There is always a saying that some people eat to live, some live to eat. So which are you? Unfortunately some of the foods that gives us pleasure are unhealthy but it does not mean we must not enjoy our food, but always do it with moderation.

Most people make their food selections based on what they see, smell or taste. Look at these three sentences: That pie sure looks good! That pie sure smells good! That pie sure taste good! Human beings are always fascinated with things they can see, hear, taste and touch.

Notice that all three statements involve food and pleasure. However the food that is producing the pleasure (in this situation the pie) may or may not be good for you from a nutritional standpoint. That is why we need to be wise in our food selections and not simply leave it up to our sense of sight, taste or smell.

Eating Healthy Can Be Enjoyable:

Some people think of eating healthy as being boring and tasteless. I think that one reason they feel this way is because most of the commercial ads we see promote foods high in calories, fat, or sugar and only a small percentage of food advertising is done for fruits, vegetables, grains and beans.

Thus if there was more nutritional education, more and more people would find eating healthy to be pleasurable and tasty. Besides that we can always be creative with our health food and what creativity means, is adding different types of veggies or fruits, to make tasteless oats, or whole grain cereal look better and tastier.

So start this practical approach to healthy eating and you would be amazed at how your body will react to it and always remember, to stay positive and be creative with your food choices.
